The mission of the Coalition for Human Rights and the Environment is to advocate for the protection of both human rights and the environment, and to create a more just and sustainable future for all.
We are committed to protecting and promoting human rights through a variety of activities and initiatives. Some examples of what we do include:
Advocating for policy change, lobbying for laws, policies, and practices that respect and protect human rights.
Supporting grassroots movements by providing resources and support to local and community-based organizations working to defend human rights and the environment.
We track and report on human rights and environmental abuses, and work to hold those responsible accountable.
Our goal is to create a world where human rights are respected and protected, and where all people have the opportunity to live in a healthy and safe environment.
We educate the public about the importance of protecting the environment and the impacts of environmental degradation on human rights.
We identify and report on environmental abuses and work to hold those responsible accountable.
Advocating for Climate action: We advocate for strong action to combat climate change and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Our goal is to create a world where the environment is respected and protected, and where all people have the opportunity to live in a healthy and sustainable environment. We strive to be a powerful voice for change, working to create a more just and sustainable future for all.
The Coalition for Human Rights and the Environment works to advance international justice by promoting the respect and protection of human rights and the environment on a global scale.
This includes providing protection and support for human rights activists and organizations, who work to defend human rights and the environment at the international level.
We believe that international justice is essential to creating a more just and sustainable world, and that it is important to hold individuals and organizations accountable for human rights and environmental abuses on a global scale.
We are working to recover the Mangrove Estero Río Lagarto – According to data from the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), in the last 40 years more than 50% of the world’s mangroves have disappeared.
We managed to eradicate the use of the glyphosate herbicide used by the Municipality in the public zone of Carrillo Beach. The application of these chemicals presented a danger, both for people and for the sea turtles that arrive at this beach to nest, since Playa Carrillo is an important nesting site for sea turtles. We continue to fight for that habitat to be respected.
We follow the impacts on the environment of the megaprojects in Guanacaste, we denounce and follow up on these developments when there is environmental damage, affectation to the water resources of the communities, social conflicts generated and archeological sites affected.
We filed a brief before the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, against the Nicoya Municipality for having incurred in violation of the right to environment and community participation in the preparation of the proposed modification to the Coastal Regulatory Plan. We demanded that the Municipality comply with the environmental studies and have the participation of the community before continuing with the proposed modification.
Bulletin of Atomic Scientists – Declaration of the 2023 Doomsday Clock – An unprecedented time of danger: 90 seconds to midnight.
This year, the Science and Safety Board of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists turns the hands of the Doomsday Clock forward. The clock now reads 90 seconds to midnight, the closest to a global catastrophe there has ever been.
As UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned in August, the world has entered “a time of nuclear peril no seen since the hight of the Cold War.”
Prehospital Care – We are working to create the initial prehospital health care and lifesaving services necessary to save lives in the coastal areas of Sámara and Carrillo. Initial health care at the scene of the incident or accident and during the transfer of the patient to the appropriate medical center is necessary to save lives and these communities do not have these basic services.
Whatever you want to do, take action today and be part of a movement coming together for human rights and the environment around the world.
